Rug Cleaning Services

Find Out How Our Fine Rug Cleaning Process Can Transform Your Rug and Enhance Its Natural Feel & Colours!

Like you, we love rugs.

Our main goal is to do what is best and safest for your precious rug. We do not use harsh cleaning products or bleaching agents that will deteriorate the rug prematurely. You will be glad to know that you are dealing with one of the biggest specialist rug cleaning in Cambridge. We spend our time on on-going training, education and investment in state of the art equipment and this ensures your rug is in the hands of caring rug cleaning enthusiasts.

We clean Persian/Iranian, Afghan, Moroccan, Indian, Chinese, Tibetan rugs… and also any type of rug fibre: silk, wool and synthetic. We achieve outstanding cleaning results by complete submersion and soaking of rugs in water.

Our Process

Step 1 Pre Wash Inspection

Step 1. Pre-Wash Inspection

Each rug is inspected for any pre-existing conditions. Many times, soil covers up dye lot variations (abrash and white knots), fibre staining, prior dye bleeding and worn areas. Some of these are weaving characteristics and others are damage.

Step 2 Dye Testing

Step 2. Dye Testing

Dye testing is done to determine the stability of the dyes used in your rug. Most fibres are dyed using a mordant process, which is
a chemical reaction that binds the dye to the fibres. If the dyes are not stable, they will bleed as soon as they get wet. (One unstable colour can ruin an entire rug!)

Stage 3 Rug Cleaning Service

Step 3. Rug Dusting

Once the pre-wash inspection is completed, the first step is dusting. Some rugs can hold up to one pound of dirt per square foot before it will “look” dirty. Cleaning a rug with pounds of fine grit and dirt in the foundation creates mud…so dusting is important.

We will remove ALL the damaging soil! Harnessing over 40,000 harmonic vibrations a minute, the Dusting Machine will vibrate and remove the most stubborn soil and sediments caught deep in the fibres of your precious rug We will also use our Air Dusting System and a Mechanical rug beater.

Step 4 Rug Cleaning

Step 4. Rug Cleaning

The rug is then given a cold water, mild cleaning bath, using soft brushes for mild agitation.

Your rug is soaked for a certain length of time, depending on how much surface soil needs to be worked out and rinsed from the rug’s fibres. The rug is thoroughly rinsed with water

Rug Decontamination Bath

Step 5. Rug Decontamination Bath

All rugs with odour-causing sources such as urine, mould, mildew, or insect infestations require decontamination. Rugs that have been flooding will also require a decontamination bath.

The decontamination bath is the only way to reduce the above odour. Please note that not all odours can be successfully removed. (Some rugs with a latex backing can be challenging).

Step 5 Rug Rinse

Step 6. Rug Rinse

Removal of all cleaning and soil residue by means of clear water rinse is vital to achieve a thoroughly clean rug. The rinse process utilise clear water at a gentle flow rate to ensure the rug is left without any residue after the cleaning process.

Step 6 Centrifuge

Step 7. Centrifuge Extraction System

This ensures that the drying of your rug is speeded up 10 times compared to any other method used by other cleaning companies. This totally eliminates the chance of mould growth, colour run, browning and any other issue associated with sloppy wet rug taking weeks to dry. Art of Clean is the only rug cleaning firm in Cambridgeshire to use this extraction system!

Specialist Treatment Rug Protection

Step 8. Rug Protector

After the rug has been cleaned we can apply the protector. This barrier coats each fibre to protect against re-soiling and staining. This allows you to simply mop up spillages as it prevents the fibre absorbing spills.

We will then groom the face fibres to leave it in its best possible condition to allow the protection to go deeper between the fibres of the rug.

Step 7 Rug Drying

Step 9. Rug Drying

Air movers and dehumidifiers are used to help facilitate drying, without the use of high heat. (so there is no worry of shrinkage). Upon a first wash, it is typical for a rug to shrink slightly (less than an inch) – just as cotton and wool clothing does in even a cold water hand wash. And as with throwing wool or cotton in a high heat dryer, you know this shrinks natural fibres… this is why we dry our rugs the way we do.

Step 8 Rug Fringe

Step 10. Rug Fringe Work and Rug Finishing

Fringes are inspected and occasionally washed in additional time. They are then dried. The rug is finally groomed with a brush. Each rug is then carefully wrapped to ensure its cleanliness during transit. We will then deliver the rug directly to your home and unwrap it for you.

Our rug cleaning service offers a collection and delivery of 25 miles around Cambridge but you are welcome to come and see us at our cleaning plant in Cambridge. (Chittering on the A10). Ask any other “rug cleaner” to see their cleaning plant and they would probably refuse your visit as they probably clean your rug in their garage!
